Axe Handle Length by Pattern: Replacement Sizing for Hatchets, Boy's Axes, Felling Axes and Mauls
Measure the eye before you look at a single length. A full-size American single-bit head wants a tongue around 2-1/8 to 2-1/4 in long by 5/8 to 3/4 in wide; miss that by a sixteenth and the hang is dead before you start. Length then falls out of the pattern: 14 in for a hatchet, 22 in for a Hudson Bay, 26-28 in for a boy's axe, 32-36 in for a felling head or a maul.

Limbing wants 2 to 2.5 lb, felling hardwood wants 3.5 to 4 lb, splitting wants 4 to 6 lb in an axe or 6 to 8 in a maul, and camp work wants under 2. Every extra pound roughly halves how long you can keep swinging with clean form, which is why the biggest head in the shed is usually the one gathering rust.

Work the head backwards: bit count first, then poll type, then whether the bevel is symmetrical, then the eye. Those four calls narrow almost any American head to two or three patterns, and the silhouette of the bit decides between them. The pattern name is what unlocks the right handle length, the right eye size and the right hang.

Fix the profile with a mill bastard file, set the bevel to a gauge, raise a burr along the full bit, then convex and remove that burr with a stone. The failure everyone makes is filing a flat bevel too thin, which chips out on the first frozen knot - so the gauge is the tool that matters more than the file.

Hickory, Ash, Birch or Fibreglass: Handle Materials Ranked by Shock, Density and Grain Tolerance
Shagbark hickory is the standard and deserves to be, at roughly 1,880 lbf Janka and around 50 lb per cubic foot, with the best shock behaviour of any commercial handle wood. But species is the second question. Handles break where the grain runs out of the side of the throat, and a 1:15 slope-of-grain hickory blank outlasts a 1:8 one by a margin no species can make up.

Vintage Axe Maker's Marks: A Dating and Identification Archive
Work the stamp first, the geometry second. A struck maker's mark on the cheek, a two-digit year box, a crown-and-arm device or a bird silhouette will each narrow a head to one company and usually to a twenty-year window. If the stamp is gone entirely, the eye dimensions, poll type and bit profile still put it in a pattern family, and pattern plus weight stamp is often enough to name the maker's catalogue line.

Rehanging an Axe Head: Wedge Sizing, Kerf Depth and the Linseed Cure Schedule
Cut the kerf to two thirds of the eye depth, drive a wooden wedge with roughly a 6 degree taper along the long axis of the eye, and leave the tongue standing 1.5 to 3 mm proud after trimming. Fitting is done by removing wood from the haft until the head slides most of the way down under hand pressure, never by driving a tight head onto an oversized tongue. Then cut the linseed with spirits and follow a daily-weekly-monthly schedule for the first year.

Pick a hammer by face material, not by silhouette. Hardened steel faces around 50 to 58 HRC are for nails and struck tools; brass, urethane, rawhide and rubber are for anything you must not mark or must not shatter. The rule that matters more than all the rest: never strike one hardened steel face against another, because the chip that comes off travels faster than you can blink.

Firewood Splitting Difficulty by Species: Hardness, Grain and What Needs a Wedge
Straight-grained species — ash, red oak, hard maple, cherry, most pine — split cleanly with a 4 to 6 lb splitting axe. Interlocked species — American elm, sweetgum, sycamore, blackgum — resist a maul entirely and want wedges, a hydraulic ram or a hard freeze. Janka hardness tells you almost nothing about splitting; grain straightness and stringiness tell you everything.

Removing Rust from an Axe Head: Electrolysis, Acid Soak and Abrasive Methods, Timed and Measured
Electrolysis and molasses remove rust by chemical reduction or chelation and take essentially nothing off the base steel, so they're the only sensible choice on a head with a maker's mark worth keeping. Vinegar and citric acid are faster and do eat steel, measurably, and they will lift an acid etch clean off. Wire wheels and blasting are minutes rather than hours and they end stamp legibility permanently.

Timber Hewing Tools Compared: Broad Axe, Hewing Hatchet, Adze and Froe
A broad axe is single-bevelled with a flat back that rides against the timber, which makes it handed — a right-hand grind is useless to a left-handed hewer and cannot be converted. A hewing hatchet does the same work one-handed at small scale. An adze cuts across the log axis to level and dress, and a froe rives billets along the grain rather than cutting at all.
