Axe Head Weight by Task: How Many Pounds You Actually Want in Your Hand

Limbing wants 2 to 2.5 lb, felling hardwood wants 3.5 to 4 lb, splitting wants 4 to 6 lb in an axe or 6 to 8 in a maul, and camp work wants under 2. Every extra pound roughly halves how long you can keep swinging with clean form, which is why the biggest head in the shed is usually the one gathering rust.

Buy the lighter head. Almost everyone reading this should buy the lighter head.

Limbing and brush: 2 to 2.5 lb on 26-28 in. Felling and bucking hardwood: 3.5 to 4 lb on 32-36 in. Splitting: 4 to 6 lb in a splitting axe, or 6 to 8 lb if it is a maul and the rounds are big. Camp and packing: 1.25 to 2 lb. Hewing: 4 to 7 lb, but on a stubby 20-24 in haft where you are steering rather than swinging.

The mistake is treating head weight as a power rating. It is a stamina budget. A 6 lb maul delivers roughly a third more energy per strike than a 3.5 lb splitting axe, and costs you well over half your swing count to do it. Whether that trade wins depends entirely on how many rounds are left in the pile.

  1. The chart: task against weight, length, bit width and swing budget

    Swing figures below are field rules of thumb for an average adult working steadily for an hour, not laboratory results. They are the numbers experienced cutters quote each other, and they vary hugely with conditioning. Treat them as ratios rather than absolutes - the shape of the curve is what matters.

    Pick your row by the job you do most often in a year, not by the hardest job you do occasionally. Buy the second tool for the occasional job later, when you know what it needs.

    Look at the splitting rows next to each other. A 4 lb splitting axe and a 7 lb maul do not sit at opposite ends of a power scale so much as at opposite ends of a working style. The axe suits a long steady session where you process everything you can and set the awkward pieces aside. The maul suits attacking a small number of nasty rounds and stopping.

  2. The half-pound rule nobody believes until the second cord

    Half a pound of extra head weight feels like nothing when you pick the tool up in a shop. Over a working session it is enormous, because the cost compounds three ways at once.

    Every swing costs more energy to accelerate. Every swing costs more to decelerate and reset for the next one, and that eccentric loading is what actually shreds forearms. And a heavier head takes longer to bring back to the top of the arc, so your swings-per-minute drops even before fatigue arrives.

    The practical consequence: a 3.5 lb feller will usually put more total wood on the ground in a morning than a 4.5 lb one, in the hands of the same person. Competition choppers use heavy heads because they swing for ninety seconds. You are not doing that.

  3. Bit width does the work that weight takes credit for

    A wide thin bit throws chips. A narrow thick bit wedges and sticks. Head weight sets how hard the tool arrives; bit geometry sets what happens on arrival, and it is where most of the perceived difference between two axes of the same weight actually lives.

    For chopping across the grain you want width - 4.5 to 5 in of cutting edge on a full-size feller - with thin cheeks behind it so the bit releases. The classic Pacific Northwest falling heads pushed this to 5.5 or 6 in of bit on a 4.5 lb head, which is a very thin section of steel and unforgiving of a grinder.

    For splitting the logic inverts. You want a modest bit, 3.5 to 4.5 in, and everything behind it flaring hard so the round is forced apart before the head can bury. That flare is why a splitting axe of the same weight as a felling axe feels so much clumsier in a chopping cut. It is not badly made. It is doing a different job.

  4. Scaling to the person doing the swinging

    The old woods rule sets an all-day chopping head at roughly two percent of body weight, and a splitting maul at three to four percent. It is crude and it is remarkably hard to beat.

    The table below applies it. Take it as a starting point and adjust downward if you are new to it, because technique earns back more than mass does for the first hundred hours.

    Read across from your own weight, then step down one column if you are working alone with nobody to take over. Fatigue is the injury risk, not the axe.

    Grip strength is the hidden variable. Two people of the same body weight can differ by a factor of two in how long they can control a 6 lb maul on the follow-through, and losing control on the follow-through is where the ankle injuries come from. If your hands are going before your shoulders, drop weight regardless of what the table says.

  5. One axe for everything, honestly appraised

    If the shed only gets one, make it 2.75 to 3.25 lb on a 30 or 31 in curved haft with a 4 to 4.5 in bit and moderately convex cheeks. Not a splitting profile, not a racing profile.

    That tool fells anything under 14 in without drama, bucks, limbs if you choke up, and splits straight-grained rounds up to about 12 in if you hit them on the edge rather than the middle. It fails at frozen elm and it fails at 24 in rounds, and those are jobs for a wedge and a sledge anyway.

    Where it genuinely will not go is hewing. A single-bevel broad axe has no substitute, because the flat back is the entire point - it rides the timber and produces the finished face. No general-purpose head can imitate that, and trying produces a beam that looks chewed.

  6. Head weight inside the Hang Rating

    Head weight is one of four inputs to the Hang Rating, sitting alongside balance point, hang angle and handle geometry - and on its own it carries the least of the four.

    The reason is that weight is the only one of the four that gets printed on the tool. The balance point does not. Where the assembled axe balances across your finger tells you what the swing will feel like: a balance point close to the head reads as chopper, further down the haft reads as splitter or general work. Two 3.5 lb heads with different poll thicknesses balance in noticeably different places on identical hafts, and they are not the same tool.

    So when you are grading a head you have never swung, weigh it, then hang it, then judge it. A heavy head on a badly hung haft rates below a light head hung true, every time.

  7. What to leave on the shelf

    • Any 5 lb-plus single-bit felling head unless you are felling old-growth softwood on a crew, which you are not
    • An 8 lb maul as a first splitting tool - start at 6 lb and find out whether you actually need the other two pounds
    • A splitting axe under 3 lb, which has neither the mass nor the wedge geometry to do anything useful
    • Anything with a mushroomed poll, because a poll that has been used as a sledge has been work-hardened and can spall
    • A very heavy head on a cheap replacement handle - the fastest route to a head coming off downrange

    One habit worth building: weigh every head you buy. Stamped weights on vintage heads were nominal, and decades of filing removes real steel. A head stamped 3-1/2 that now weighs 3.1 lb is not a bargain, it is a head that has been sharpened past its working life and has a thin, hot-running bit.
